RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 3 seed Seattle U and No. 5 seed California Baptist earned victories in the first round of the 2022 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday night at CBU Soccer Stadium. Seattle U bested No. 6 Grand Canyon 2-1 and host CBU took down No. 4 seed Utah Valley 3-1.
Seattle U advanced to the first tournament semifinal on Nov. 11 against No. 2 seed San José State at 1 p.m. PT. CBU will follow with a showdown against No. 1 seed Air Force at 4 p.m. PT in the second semifinal of the day.
No. 3 Seattle U 2, No. 6 Grand Canyon 1
Grand Canyon held the edge in shots against Seattle U 9-6, but the Redhawks led the Lopes 4-3 in shots on frame. GCU also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Habib Barry gathered in a loose ball and finished an unassisted goal at 31:29 to give Seattle U a 1-0 lead. Conference goals leader and WAC Offensive Player of the Year Shaun Joash squared the match for GCU at 62:48, successfully burying a penalty into the left corner of the net. Seattle U re-took the lead at 65:56, as a looping cross from the left flank from Josh Thacker found a waiting header from Campbell Strong in the penalty area to provide the Redhawks a 2-1 advantage.
No. 5 California Baptist 3, No. 4 Utah Valley 1
CBU raced to a 19-10 edge in shots against Utah Valley, though the Wolverines finished ahead 7-6 in shots on frame.
Adolfo Pino opened the scoring at 7:35 of the opening half for the 1-0 CBU lead. Utah Valley’s Aaron Nixon tied the match in the 31st minute, driving home a Loed Klaasen cross at 30:55 for the 1-1 tie. Leo Mendes tallied a CBU goal at 63:12 from David Cordes and then provided an assist to Luis Mueller for the Lancer insurance goal at 69:07.
