SFA ATOP WAC RESUME SEEDING RANKING

In the latest WAC Resume Seeding System ranking on Dec. 27, Stephen F. Austin remained as the top live seed in the WAC after an 10-2 start to the season. The Lumberjacks tallied 2.34 points to place ahead of 8-3 Utah Tech (0.78 points). Other teams with positive point totals were UT Arlington (6-6, 0.38), and UTRGV (6-5, 0.16).

CONFERENCE PLAY IS HERE

WAC teams are prepared to officially open conference play for the 2022-23 season on Dec. 29 when Grand Canyon travels to Utah Valley for a 3 p.m. local tip. Six league matchups are on tap for Dec. 29 and another six on Dec. 31. WAC teams posted a 70-75 record in nonconference and 6 of the league’s 13 members enter the conference schedule at .500 or better this season.

SFA ON FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK

As the conference slate approaches, Stephen F. Austin enters with a five-game winning streak only dropping one game in the month of December. SFA has secured wins over Texas A&M-Commerce, Arizona State, Texas Wesleyan, Bradley and George Mason. SFA has three players averaging ten or more points led by Aiyana Johnson at 13.3 a game.

UTAH TECH TOPS LINDENWOOD

The Trailblazer closed out non-conference play with an 82-68 victory over Lindenwood. Utah Tech had four players score in double figures led by Maggie McCord and Amber Kartchner who each had 19 points. Breaunna Gillen posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 assists. Emily Isaacson posted double figures with 11 points and Averi Papa also added 11 for the Trailblazers. Utah Tech ended the game shooting 54 percent from the field, 34 percent from the three and 60 percent from the charity stripe. UT totaled 29 rebounds, 21 assists, nine steals and 17 turnovers.

ACU GETS 30-POINT VICTORY OVER MCMURRY

Four players scored in double digits, six players scored at least seven points, as ACU ran away with a 30-point home win over McMurry to wrap up the non-conference schedule. Addison Martin set a new season and career-high in points, Raychael Harjo played well off the bench, and Maleeah Langstaff tallied another double-double to lead the way in scoring for the Wildcats.

NM STATE SCORES 90 IN WIN OVER NORTHERN NEW MEXICO

NM State beat Northern New Mexico by a score of 90-42. The Aggies 90-point performance was its highest scoring total of the season. NM State shot an efficient 53.9 percent from the field only connecting on three triples. Lucia Yenes led all scorers with a career high 19 points on 9-14 shooting (64.3%). Tayelin Grays was four points shy of a career high after putting up 14 in the win. Despite the abundance of offence by the Aggies, it was the defense that stood out. NM State forced a season high 27 turnovers and 17 steals against the Eagles, 11 of the 13 Aggies who saw action also recorded a steal in the game.

THE WAC IN NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS

In the latest NCAA DI national statistics rankings that were released on Dec. 27, Grand Canyon ranks first in steals per game at 15.6 and fifth in turnover margin(9.27) along with being fifth in turnovers forced per game (25.00). Sam Houston is currently ranked fifth in offensive rebounds per game at 17.8. California Baptist currently ranks fourth in three-point field goals per game with 29.8 followed by Abilene Christian in the 11th spot at 27.9 and UTRGV in 13th at 27.1. Sam Houston ranks 20th in total rebounds per game with 44.10 and Southern Utah is ranked 21st in the same category at 44.09.
