TicketSmarter WAC Women's Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Four wins in their four matches led Tarleton to sweeping the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis Athlete of the Week honors. Martha Makantasi was named the singles Player of the Week then teamed with Elsa Boisson to claim doubles Team of the Week accolades.
Makantasi started her four-match stretch with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Southwestern’s Lydia Lee on Tuesday afternoon. Three days later she won another match in perfect fashion as she topped Montana State’s Andrea Cuquerella during the H-E-B Tournament of Championships in Corpus Christi. During her match on Friday she notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory against UT Permian Basin’s Teodora Vrucan at the No. 1 singles slot. She completed the stretch with her third 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position as she beat UT Rio Grande Valley’s Lea Karren.
Makantasi and Boisson were steady as could be at the No. 3 doubles spot. The duo beat Southwestern’s Lauren Chisholm and Taylor Despriet 6-2 on Tuesday to start their dominate week. Their Friday match saw them beat Jazmin Lerman and Maria Villarejo from Montana State 6-3. Just hours later they cruised past UT Permian Basin’s Lea Mjertan and Monika Cantu without dropping a game. Their final contest saw them beat UT Rio Grande Valley’s Sandra Putz and Kristyna Mamicova 6-4.
As a team the Texans dropped just two team points in those four matches.
Tarleton has won six straight matches; their longest streak in eight seasons when they won seven in-a-row. They are 7-2 overall which marks their best nine-match start to a season since the 2015-16 campaign.
