TicketSmarter WAC Men’s Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Lamar’s Daniel Sancho Arbizu has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference singles Player of the Week with the Abilene Christian tandem of Jose Maria Rastrojo and Mihaly Deli earning TicketSmarter doubles Team of the Week accolades.
Playing from the No. 1 singles in a pair of matches, Sancho Arbizu was vital to the Cardinals perfect weekend during their two matches in Mississippi. He started the stretch with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Southern Mississippi’s Dhruv Sunish as Lamar posted a 4-3 team victory. The next day, he fought back for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Michal Lusovsky of UAB during the Cardinal’s 5-2 win as a team in a neutral site contest. The freshman provided the clinching team point in both of his singles wins. Lamar has won six straight team matches.
The duo of Rastrojo and Deli posted a victory in three of their four matches as the Wildcats notched a pair of team wins. They started their four-match run from the No. 2 position with a 6-4 win against Rice’s AJ Valenty and Trinity Grear on Tuesday. A three-match in two-day stretch began with them knocking off Louisiana’s Orio Fillat Gimenez Vasil Dimitrov 7-5 Friday at the H-E-B Tournament of Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas. Later that day the knocked off Ryuya Ata and Borja Delgado 6-4 from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Their only setback was a 6-2 decision to NM State the next day.
