TicketSmarter WAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Abilene Christian's Irene Rono and Stephen F. Austin's Erica Ellis has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 2 through 6.
Rono, a junior from Eldama Ravine, Kenya, won the 3000 meters at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Friday through Satruday. She updated her collegiate best with a time of 9:22.72 that puts her at the top of the WAC performance list according to TFRRS. She won the event with a two-second lead over Alabama's Jami Reed.
Ellis, a junior from Rocherster, N.Y., won the pole vault at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Friday through Saturday. She marked 4.19m (13' 9") which would put her second in the WAC, just under her own season best, and 31st in the NCAA performance lists according to TFRRS.
Other track nominees: Grand Canyon's Kelly Moodry won the 800 meters (2:08.34) at the WSU Invitational, Friday … NM State's Emily Stutesman won the 3000 meters with an altitude adjusted time of 9:44.55, putting her fourth in the WAC performance list at the New Mexico Classic, Friday … Seattle U's Tricht Jocelyn placed eighth in the 60-meter run (7.78) and ninth in the 200-meter (25.31) at the WSU Open … Stephen F. Austin's Nissi Kabongo finished ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.51 that puts her fourth in the WAC performance list at the Charlie Thomas Invitational … Utah Valley's Hannah Branch won the mile run with an altitude adjusted time of 4:54.89 at the Weber State Indoor, Friday.
Other field nominees: Abilene Christian's Aninna Brandenburg placed third in shot put with a 16.20m (53' 1.75") mark that puts her second in the WAC and 35th in the NCAA performance lists at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Friday … Grand Canyon's Taryn Burkett placed third in triple jump with a 12.65m (41' 6") mark that puts her first in the WAC performance list at the WSU Invitational, Thursday … NM State's Phetisang Makhethe placed second in weight throw with a 17.79m (58' 4.5") mark that puts her second in the WAC performance list at the New Mexico Classic, Friday … Utah Valley's Maddy Beyeler placed first in weight throw with a 16.58m (54' 4.75") at the USU Aggie Speed & Power Meet, Saturday.
