DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference named its 2022 WAC Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year following a vote by the conference head coaches. Grand Canyon's Israel Oloyede and Stephen F. Austin's Nissi Kabongo earned the honors on the men's and women's side, respectively.
Oloyede, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., earned the WAC Indoor Track and Field Men's Athlete of the Year honors after setting a new WAC record in weight throw with a mark of 24.45m (80' 2.75") breaking the previous record of 23.95m (78' 7") set by UTEP's Toren Johnson in 1984 at the Dr. MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational last January. His performance grants him the top-seed in the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. Oloyede also won weight throw title at the 2022 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with a mark of 22.89m (75' 1.25").
Kabongo, a junior of Plano, Texas, earned the WAC Indoor Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Year honors after being the High Point Scorer at the 2022 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. She won the 400 meters with a time of 54.78 seconds, the high jump with a mark of 1.78m (5' 10") and was part of SFA's gold medal-winning 4x400 meter relay (3:44.26). Kabongo recorded a personal high jump mark of 1.85m (6' 0.75") in January, qualifying her for the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships as the 10th seed in the event.
