TicketSmarter WAC Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced
After clinching the conference regular season men’s tennis championship, Lamar claimed both of the TicketSmarter men’s tennis Athlete of the Week honors. Daniel Sancho Arbizu has been named the singles Player of the Week while the duo of Max Amling and Filippo Salsini earned doubles Team of the Week accolades.
As a team the Cardinals beat Chicago State 6-1 on Friday to set-up an undefeated match-up with NM State the following day. Lamar nudged by the Aggies by a 4-3 count to secure a perfect conference regular season record.
Sancho Arbizu went undefeated at the No. 1 singles position. He started the weekend stretch with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Chicago State’s Pedro Alvarez. The following day, the freshman battled back from an 0-3 hole in the third set to claim a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4 victory against Louis Menard. The win was the final match being contested.
Amling and Salsini won the critical doubles match against NM State. With each team winning a doubles match, the Lamar duo topped Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke 6-3 at the No. 2 position to claim the team point.
