TicketSmarter WAC Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER – After an undefeated weekend and clinching the Western Athletic Conference West Division title, Grand Canyon swept the TicketSmarter WAC women’s tennis Athlete of the Week honors. Santa Strombacha has been named the singles Player of the Week with the duo of Fabienne Schmidt and Autumn Prudhomme claiming doubles Team of the Week accolades.

Strombacha posted a pair of wins at the No. 3 singles position. She started her week with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory against Chicago State’s Diana Borodina on Friday. Grand Canyon won the team match by a 5-2 count. With the division title on the line the next day against NM State, Strombacha clinched the team title with her win. Despite dropping the first 6-3, she didn’t drop a game the rest of the match as the Lopes won the team contest 5-2.

The duo of Schmidt and Prudhomme lost only two games in their two matches at the No. 2 slot. The combo knocked off Kristina Pukhaeva and Katarina Dukic from Chicago State without losing a game. In their contest against the Aggies they posted a 6-2 win against Natsuki Nishimura and Gavi Kalaga. The tandem concluded WAC play undefeated.   

The Lopes head into this week’s WAC tournament as the No. 1 seed. The eight-team, three-day event begins Friday in Beaumont, Texas.
