WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Abilene Christian's Jack Marshall and Utah Valley's Aaron Johnson has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 30 through April 3.
Marshall, a sophomore from Brady, Texas, placed within the top-eight in two events at the TTU Masked Rider Open, Friday through Saturday. He placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.88 seconds that puts him first in the WAC and 45th in the NCAA performance lists according to TFRRS. He then placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.45, second just behind his own season best (10.44) in the WAC and 85th in the NCAA performance lists.
Johnson, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, placed first in long jump at the UVU Collegiate Invitational, Thursday through Friday. He won the event with a career best mark of 7.69m (25' 2.75") that puts him first in the WAC and 11th in the NCAA performance lists.
Other track nominees: California Baptist's Said Mechaal won the 5000 meters with a time of 13:55.33, first in the WAC and 47th in the NCAA performance lists, at the West Coast Relays, Thursday through Friday ... Grand Canyon's Landon Rast won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:05.56 putting him fourth in the WAC and 79th in the NCAA performance lists at the GCU Invitational, Friday through Saturday … Tarleton's Kevin Baez won the 3000-meter with a time of 8:34.76 at the Baylor Invitational, Saturday … UT Rio Grande Valley's Jermarrion Stewart placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.58 and seventh in the 200m dash at the Roadrunner Invitational, Saturday … Utah Valley's Cameron Franklin won the 400-meter with a time of 47.53 seconds at the UVU Collegiate Invitational.
Other field nominees: Abilene Christian's Grant Baker placed second in pole vault with a career best mark of 5.81m (17' 0"), second in the WAC and 37th in the NCAA performance lists, at the TTU Maked Rider Open … Grand Canyon's Moataz Hassan won the shot put with a mark of 16.68m (54' 8.75") at the GCU Invitational … Tarleton's Alan Palmer placed second in long jump with a mark of 7.49m (24' 7") and tied for third in high jump with mark of 1.91m (6' 3.25") at the Baylor Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Marco Guarjardo won the javelin throw with a mark of 50.51m (165' 8") and also won the triple jump with a mark of 13.59m (44' 7") at the Roadrunner Invitational.
WOMEN
California Baptist's Greta Karinauskaite and Abilene Christian's Annina Brandenburg has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 30 through April 3.
Karinauskaite, a freshman from Siauliai, Lithuania, won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the West Coast Relays, Thursday through Friday. She won the event with a time of 9:51.43, breaking the CBU program record by more than 30 seconds while recording the season fastest NCAA performance according to TFRRS.
Brandenburg, a graduate student from Dusseldorf, Germany, earned her third WAC Athlete of the Week honors after her performance at the TTU Masked Rider Open, Friday through Saturday. She placed second and improved her career best in the discus throw with a mark of 58.18m (190' 10"), first in the WAC and third in the NCAA performance lists. She then won shot put with a new career best of 16.55m (54' 3.75"), second in the WAC and 20th in the NCAA performance lists.
Other track nominees: Abilene Christian's Savannah Walker placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.89 seconds, good for second in the WAC performance list, and placed fifth in the 400 meters with a lifetime best of 56.96 seconds at the TTU Masked Rider Open ... Grand Canyon's Kelly Moodry won the 400 meters with a time of 55.15 seconds, second in the WAC performance list, at the GCU Invitational, Friday through Saturday … Lamar's Sydne Porter placed third in the 200-meter dash with time of 23.92 seconds, first in the WAC performance list, at the Houston Alumni Invitational, Saturday … Seattle U's Maya McCabe placed fourth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:11.91 at the Hayward Premiere, Friday through Saturday … Tarleton's Jenna Brazeal finished runner-up in the 800-meter with time of 2:12.86 at the Baylor Inviational, Saturday … UT Rio Grande Valley's Samantha Gonzalez won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:36.69 at the Roadrunner Invitational, Saturday … Utah Valley's Everlyn Kemboi won the 5000 meters with a career best time of 16:04.18 that puts her first in the WAC and 25th in the NCAA performance lists at the Hayward Premiere.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Samaria McDonald won the hammer throw with a mark of 60.46m (198' 4"), second in the WAC and 44th in the NCAA performance lists, at the GCU Invitational … Seattle U's Nicole Whittern placed sixth in javelin throw (42.47m/139' 4") at the Hayward Premiere … Tarleton's Rylee Hennig is runner-up in high jump with a mark of 1.72m (5' 7.75"), first in the WAC and 62nd in the NCAA performance lists, at the Baylor Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Annelle Rodriguez placed third in high jump with a mark of 1.55m (5' 1") at the Roadrunner Invitational … Utah Valley's Sarah Carillo placed third in shot put with a mark of 13.77m (45' 2.25"), ninth in discus throw (42.01/137' 10") and 20th in hammer throw (40.69m/133' 6") at the UVU Collegiate Invitational, Thursday through Friday.
UP NEXT
The week starts early as we opened with three meets beginning Thursday. Abilene Christian will be hosted by Stephen F. Austin at the Carl Knight Invitational and Multi, Grand Canyon will on the road at the Sun Angel Classic while NM State will at the New Mexico Spring Invite.
Four other meets kick off on Friday. Dixie State and Utah Valley will be at the Weber State Spring Open, Chicago State at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, Sam Houston will be on the road at the Texas A&M Team Invitational as well as UT Rio Grande Valley who is on the road at the UIW Invitational.
ACU and UVU are going one back to back meets as they go back on the road to North Texas Classic and Utah Spring Classic, respectively, Saturday. The Wildcats will be seeing fellow WAC member Tarleton at North Texas while Lamar begins their road meet at the Cowboy Relays.
