This Week in WAC Women's Golf - April 7

TICKETSMARTER WAC WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Lamar's Alessia Trebbi-Tindall has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for March 30 through April 5.

Trebbi-Tindall, a junior from London, took advantage of playing in Beaumont as she earned medalist honors and led Lamar to the team title at the Cardinal Challenge. After a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round and a 4-over 76 in the second round, she fired her best round of the week in Tuesday's finale, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to finish at 7-over-par and win the tournament by a stroke. The Cardinals' margin of victory as a team was not nearly as close as Lamar outshot second-place Tarleton by 20 strokes to cruise to the tournament win.

Other nominees: California Baptist's Filipa Capelo posted a career-best 1-under-par in the opening round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic and finished 6-over to help the Lancers to a third-place team finish … Chicago State's Jordyn Sims led the Cougars at the Indiana State Invitational, firing a 36-hole 159 to tie for 21st … Grand Canyon's Alexis Linam led all WAC golfers at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, shooting a 3-over-par 219 to tie for sixth amongst 117 golfers … Seattle U's Samantha Bruce had the Redhawks' low round of the tournament, opening play with a 2-under-par 70, to finish in a tie for sixth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz. … Tarleton's Mathilde Brogens finished just one stroke out of the lead, shooting an 8-over-par 224 to take second place at the Cardinal Challenge … UT Rio Grande Valley's Sophia Tejeda took fourth at the Cardinal Challenge, shooting a 14-over-par 230.

ON THE TEE
The final week of the regular season is upon us with six teams in action beginning Monday. Grand Canyon, NM State and Seattle U will be in University Place, Wash. for the Chambers Bay Invitational, hosted by Washington. Dixie State and Utah Valley will both be in Goodyear, Ariz. for the Bobcat Spring Invitational while Stephen F. Austin heads up to Broken Arrow, Okla. for the Oral Roberts Spring Invitational.

BY THE NUMBERS
Sam Houston's Jennifer Herbst is the leader in the WAC in stroke average at 71.8 strokes per round. Teammate Zulaikah Nasser is second at 72.5, followed by SU's Rivekka Jumagulova in third at 73.0. As a team, SHSU is also the top squad with a 294.6 stroke average. Grand Canyon is second at 295.4 followed by Seattle U in third at 296.0.

UPPING THE COMPETITION
The WAC will be in a unique situation this season with two teams having earned automatic qualifications to NCAA Regionals in May. NM State will be the defending WAC champions, having won the 2021 Championship by seven strokes at Boulder Creek GC before earning a top-10 finish at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional. Sam Houston also earned an automatic selection after winning the Southland Conference Championship by 19 strokes over Central Arkansas. The Bearkats were unable to compete in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional after wet weather made the course unplayable. Senior Hanna Alberto still advanced to the NCAA Championship, becoming the first SHSU golfer to play at the final site.

IT'S BIGGER IN TEXAS (AND UTAH)
On Jan. 14, the WAC announced the addition of five new schools in the upcoming years. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Southern Utah were all offered and accepted membership invitations. With the addition, the WAC now has six schools in Texas, more than any other conference in the country, and will have three schools in Utah, also a national best. The four Texas schools joined the league on July 1, 2021 and Southern Utah will follow 365 days later, officially joining the WAC on July 1, 2022.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS TO THE LONE STAR STATE
Originally the site for the canceled 2020 WAC Women's Golf Championship and for the first time since 2004, the WAC Championship heads to Texas as Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville will play host to the conference tournament on April 18-20, 2022. Designed by Byron Nelson and Joe Finger, Riverhill has been host to over 40 USGA and Texas Golf Association events.
