WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Abilene Christian's Jamal January and Sam Houston's Clayton Fritsch has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 27 through May 1.
January, a senior from Austin, Texas, won the 100-meter dash and 110 meters hurdles at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight, Thursday. He won the 100 meters with a time of 10.33 seconds, good for second in the WAC performance list according to TFRRS. He then won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.75 seconds, recording the fastest time in the WAC performance list. His time in the hurdles did not get recorded on the NCAA performance list due to wind assistance, but it would have placed 28th in the nation.
Fritsch, a senior from Sealy, Texas, won the pole vault at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster, Saturday. He won with a mark of 5.75m (18' 10.25"), setting a new meet and stadium record while recording the second-best mark in the nation this season just behind his own season best. Fritsch is 0.5m (2") off his personal best (5.80m/19' 0.25") that he set two weeks ago.
Other track nominees: California Baptist's Said Mechaal finished runner-up in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:48.68, second in the WAC performance list, at the Fresno State Invitational, Friday ... Stephen F. Austin's Muzuri Mattar won the 400-meter run with a time of 46.67 seconds, second in the WAC performance list, then came back and ran a leg in SFA's winning 4x400m relay (3:08.42) at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight … UT Rio Grande Valley's Alex Munoz placed third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:47.78 at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster … Utah Valley's Caleb Furnell won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.38 seconds then placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.12 seconds, fourth and sixth in the WAC performance list, respectively, at the Idaho State Bengal Invitational, Friday through Saturday.
Other field nominees: Abilene Christian's Tyler Richardson won the shot (17.27m/56' 8") then placed third in hammer throw (55.59m/182' 4") at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight. His performances put him first and fifth in the WAC performance list, respectively … Grand Canyon's Gabriel Binion won the long jump with a mark of 7.68m (25' 2.5"), second in the WAC and 40th in the NCAA performance lists, at the Desert Heat Classic, Friday … Stephen F. Austin's Cord Neal won the javelin throw with a mark of 70.28m (230' 7"), good for third in the WAC and 22nd in the NCAA performance lists, at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight … UT Rio Grande Valley's Michael Campbell placed fourth in discus throw with a mark of 50.82m (166' 9"), seventh in the WAC performance list, at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster … Utah Valley's Jacob Deming tied for third in pole vault (4.85m/15' 11") then placed eighth in the long jump (6.52m/21' 4.75") at the Idaho State Bengal Invitational.
WOMEN
California Baptist's Greta Karinauskaite and Abiene Christian's Annina Brandenburg has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 27 through May 1.
Karinauskaite, a sophomore from Siauliai, Lithuania, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Fresno State Invitational, Friday. She won the race with a time of 9:52.28, just 0.85 seconds of her personal best set earlier this season (9:51.43). Her performance this weekend puts her 12th in the NCAA performance list according to TFRRS.
Brandenburg, a graduate student from Dusseldorf, Germany, won five out of five throws events in back-to-back meets this past weekend. She started the week winning the discus throw (57.35m/188' 2") and shot put (16.91m/55' 5.75") at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight, Thursday.
Brandenburg then proceeded to update ACU's shot put record when she won the event with a mark of 17.10m (56'1.25"), best in the WAC and 20th in the NCAA performance lists, at the TTU Corky Classic, Friday through Saturday. She also won the discus throw with an NCAA top-five mark of 58.27m (191' 2") and the javelin throw with a mark of 47.44m (155' 8") at the TTU Corky Classic.
Other track nominees: Abilene Christian's Taylor Tolen won the 100-meter dash (11.42 seconds) and 200-meters dash (23.70 seconds) at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight. Her times puts her first and second in the WAC performance list, respectively … Grand Canyon's Anaya Bailey placed third in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.97 seconds, second in the WAC performance list, at the Desert Heat Classic, Friday … Lamar's Yasmin Austridge won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:27.59 and placed ninth in the 800 meters (2:15.52) at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster, Friday … NM State's Grace Pendarvis placed 11th in the 100-meter dash (11.67 seconds) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.86 seconds) at the Desert Heat Classic … Stephen F. Austin's Nissi Kabongo won the won the 400-meter hurdles with a school record time of 58.55 seconds, first in the WAC and 45th in the NCAA performance lists, at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight … UT Rio Grande Valley's Samantha Gonzalez placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:06.92) at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster … Utah Valley's Larissa Dabb won the 400-meter dash (55.17 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (24.41 seconds) at the Idaho State Bengal Invitational, Friday through Saturday.
Other field nominees: Stephen F. Austin's Nissi Kabongo got nominated on both sides as she updated the school record in high jump with a mark of 1.84m (6' 0.5") placing her first in the WAC and 12th in the NCAA performance lists, at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight ... NM State's Phethisang Makhethe placed fifth in the hammer throw while breaking the Aggies' record with a 65.40m (214' 7") mark that puts her first in the WAC and 23rd in the NCAA performance lists, at the Desert Heat Classic … Utah Valley's Maysen Rollo tied for third in pole vault with a mark of 3.76m (12' 4") at the Idaho State Bengal Invitational.

California Baptist will kickoff the week at the Sound Track Meet, Friday. Chicago State will compete at the Bob Harris Open while Seattle U will be at Ken Shannon Invite, Saturday.
This will be the final week of meets before we head to the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Seattle, May 12.
