DENVER – Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coordinator of Softball Officials Dave Neidlinger today announced his retirement after 16 years with the Conference.

“We thank Dave for his many years of hard work in the WAC and his commitment to the sport of softball,” said Commissioner Brian Thornton. “We congratulate him on his career and wish him all the best during his much-deserved retirement.”

Neidlinger was hired in the summer of 2006 as the first softball coordinator in WAC history. Countless WAC umpires have been selected to work NCAA Regionals, Super Regionals and Women's College World Series games during his tenure.

"After spending more than five decades in softball umpiring, I am ready to retire," Neidlinger said. "I have immensely enjoyed my time in the softball world and take considerable satisfaction in the advancement of those I've mentored along the way. I am walking away with so many unforgettable moments and lifelong friends."

During his illustrious career, Neidlinger served as the umpire coordinator for National Pro Fastpitch (2012), the Mountain West Conference (1999-2017) and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (1992-2012), and was one of the five original members of the NCAA Coordinators group.  He served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Sports Officials Association, President of the Colorado High School Softball Umpires Association and served on the National Federation of High School Softball Rules committee for four years. Neidlinger also coordinated umpires for the prestigious Colorado Fireworks Tournament from 1985-2019.

Neidlinger began his umpiring career in 1970 while stationed at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs. He umpired six National ASA Championships and numerous conference championships and regional tournaments at the Division I and II levels. Neidlinger was inducted into the Colorado chapter of the ASA Hall of Fame as an umpire in 2007.

A new WAC Coordinator of Softball Officials is expected to be named in the near future.
