11 WAC Players Selected in MLB Draft

DENVER - A total of 11 players from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) were selected in the 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft held July 17-19 in Los Angeles. 

Grand Canyon pitcher Nick Hull was the first WAC player to go off the board as a seventh round pick to the Chicago Cubs. Hull led the WAC in Earned Run Average (ERA) at 1.77 in 35 2/3 innings of work in 18 relief appearances.

The Lopes had four players taken in the MLB Draft. Hull along with First Team All-WAC selections Tayler Aguilar (15th round to the NY Yankees) and closer Vince Reilly (18th round to the Oakland A’s) along with pitcher Eli Ankeney (20th round to the NY Mets) will have a chance to advance their careers in the pros.

WAC Tournament champion New Mexico State had two players drafted. Pitcher Ian Mejia went in the 11th round to Atlanta with fellow Aggies hurler Sammy Natera going in the 17th round to the Los Angeles Angels.

California Baptist had three players selected in the 2022 MLB Draft. First Team All-WAC outfielder Chad Castillo went in the 9th round to the Philadelphia Phillies with pitcher CJ Culpepper going in the 13th round to the Minnesota Twins and First Team All-WAC catcher David Martin hearing his name called in the 16th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tarleton pitcher Matthew Hickey went in the 15th round to the St. Louis Cardinals.

WAC affiliate member Sacramento State had pitcher Eli Saul going to Arizona in the 13th round.
