Tarleton 2022 Football Season Preview
DENVER – As the countdown continues to the start of the 2022 NCAA football season, the next edition of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) football preview series focuses on Tarleton.
TEXANS LOOK TO BUILD ON SOLID WAC DEBUT
Tarleton posted a 6-5 overall record and 2-3 mark in WAC play during the conference’s return to football in 2021. The Texans won four of their final six games last season, splitting the last four conference matchups 2-2. Tarleton joined Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin as the only WAC programs with more than 400 yards of total offense per game (415.5) in 2021.
THIRD YEAR OF DI FOOTBALL ON TAP FOR TARLETON
Officially making the jump to the NCAA Division I level as an FCS Independent for the 2020 season, Tarleton has logged an 11-8 mark thus far entering its third season as a DI program. The Texans previously captured five Lone Star Conference (DII) Championships (2001, 2009, 2013, 2018, 2019) before ascending to the top division in college football.
LEGENDARY HEAD COACH WHITTEN LEADS TARLETON INTO 2022
Head coach Todd Whitten is the winningest coach in Tarleton history and is in his third official tenure leading the Texans, compiling a 90-45 (.667) record over his first 12 seasons at the helm. Whitten has guided Tarleton to three conference championships and has earned five conference coach of the year trophies during his time as the head man in Stephenville, Texas.
DURAN READY FOR IMPACTFUL SECOND SEASON WITH TEXANS
Tarleton sophomore defensive lineman Javier Duran landed on the 2022 preseason all-conference team in recognition of a stellar debut season with the Texans in 2021 following his transfer from Independence Community College. Duran started all 11 games for Tarleton last year, registering 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Duran shined in his Tarleton debut against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 4 of 2021, logging 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks in a competitive showing with the Lumberjacks.
