TicketSmarter WAC Volleyball Players Of The Week Announced
DENVER – UTRGV's Sarah Cruz, Stephen F. Austin's Haley Hoang and Tarleton's Ailie Hair have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Volleyball Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Players of the Week, for the match week ending on Sunday, Aug. 28.
Cruz, a senior outside hitter, guided UTRGV to a 2-1 record during the North Texas Invite to kick off the 2022 season, which included a sweep of Jacksonville (Aug. 26) and a five-set victory against host North Texas (Aug. 27). Cruz led all WAC players with 5.42 points per set after hitting .307 with 4.62 kills per set and two double-doubles over the opening weekend. Cruz swung at a .387 clip with 17 kills and four block assists against Jacksonville and went for 26 kills on .304 hitting with 11 digs against North Texas.
Hoang, a junior defensive specialist, helped guide SFA to a perfect 3-0 showing at the SMU Tournament, with matching 3-1 wins over DePaul (Aug. 26), UC Irvine (Aug. 26) and host SMU (Aug. 27). Hoang led the conference with 65 total digs and ranked second in the WAC with 5.42 digs per set over three matches, which included 28 digs against DePaul and 23 digs versus SMU.
Hair, a first-year middle blocker, played a key role in her debut for Tarleton in a 3-0 sweep as the host of the Texan Invitational. Tarleton defeated Farleigh Dickinson (Aug. 26) 3-1 and blanked Northwestern State (Aug. 26) and ULM (Aug. 27) in straight sets. Hair paced the WAC with a .436 hitting percentage for the week, posting 10 kills and two service aces against Farleigh Dickinson and four service aces in the Northwestern State win.
