SOUTHERN UTAH, UTAH VALLEY FINAL TWO WAC UNBEATEN TEAMS
Only two teams from the WAC remained unbeaten following the second full week of nonconference play to start the 2022 season. Southern Utah has won its first four starts to post a 4-0 record, with in-state foe Utah Valley yet to suffer a defeat with a 1-0-2 mark. Southern Utah and California Baptist are the only sides in the WAC with active winning streaks as of Aug. 29, with CBU winning two straight matches.
SUU REMAINS ATOP THE LEAGUE TABLE
After blitzing the opposition with goals in bunches during the opening weekend of the 2022 campaign, Southern Utah found the winning goal in the 86th minute to defeat UTEP 2-1 on Aug. 25 to remain undefeated. The Thunderbirds have outscored the opposition 20-1 over their first four matches played, tallying multiple goals in three wins thus far. A total of nine Southern Utah players have found the goal column in the early going, with Sammie Sofonia pacing the WAC with six goals as of Aug. 31.
GOURLEY GETTING ROLLING FOR GCU
Grand Canyon strike Gianna Gourley was an offensive force for the Lopes in a 1-0-1 week that included a 3-0 clean sheet at UNLV on Aug. 25 and a spirited 3-3 draw at Utah State on Aug. 28. Gourley picked up an assist on the final goal of the UNLV match before erupting for goals in the 52nd and 55th (penalty kick) minutes to vault GCU into the lead against Utah State. Gourley ranked second in the WAC in goals (4) and points (9) as of Aug. 31.
KEY RESULT FOR UTAH VALLEY AGAINST NO. 23 UCF
Utah Valley defended its home pitch in a competitive 0-0 draw with No. 23 UCF on Aug. 25. The Wolverines held the Knights to only four shots on goal during the contest, including just one in the second half, to register the top-25 result.
CBU ROLLS WITH PAIR OF WINS IN NEW ENGLAND
California Baptist rolled in a pair of matches during an East Coast swing, downing Bryant 4-1 on Aug. 25 before shutting out Merrimack 3-0 on Aug. 28. The Lancers logged 34 total shots during the weekend, with 15 attempts finding frame.
THUNDERBIRDS ONE OF THE NCAA’S BEST OFFENSES
As of the NCAA Division I national statistics update on Aug. 30, Southern Utah ranked first in the country with 20 total team goals and 54 total team points. Forward Sammie Sofonia remained the NCAA leader with six goals individually.
