DENVER – UTRGV’s Jan Engels and Houston Baptist’s Sam Zeeman have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, for the match week ending on Sunday, Sept. 18.
Engels, a senior defender, enjoyed a standout performance for UTRGV in a 4-1 win against Omaha on Sept. 17, tallying points on the first three goals for the Vaqueros. Engels earned the primary assist on the first two goals at 0:55 and 45:56 before finding the back of the net after stealing possession from the Omaha backline and burying a goal from the top of the box. The UTRGV defense limited Omaha to just six total shots and two shots on goal in the victory.
Zeeman, a freshman defender, was one of five different goal scorers for Houston Baptist in a dominant 6-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Sept. 17. Zeeman registered his first career goal at 50:43 to push the Huskies ahead 5-0, and the HBU defense limited Eastern Illinois to just four shot attempts (none on goal) while Zeeman was on the pitch.
