SFA ATOP WAC RESUME SEEDING RANKING

In the latest WAC Resume Seeding System ranking on Jan. 15, Stephen F. Austin remained at the top of the conference seeding with a 14-3 overall record and 4-1 mark in WAC play to post 3.66 points. Other teams with positive point values included Utah Tech (12-5; 4-2 WAC; 1.58 points), Grand Canyon (13-4; 5-1 WAC; 1.24 points), and Southern Utah (9-7; 5-0 WAC; 0.52 points).

SOUTHERN UTAH MOVED TO 5-0 IN WAC PLAY

Southern Utah improved to 5-0 in WAC play, the only team in the league with an unbeaten conference record after defeating Utah Valley 70-66 on Jan. 11 and Sam Houston 60-55 on Jan. 14. Against Utah Valley Megan Jensen scored a game high 22 points. Cherita Daugherty, this week’s TicketSmarter WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week finished with 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. In the contest against Sam Houston, Daugherty had another huge game with 28 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead Southern Utah.

GRAND CANYON ON FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK

Grand Canyon improved to 5-1 in conference play and are currently on a five-game winning streak. GCU pulled out a two-point victory over UT Arlington on Jan. 12 and then topped UTRGV 61-52 on Jan. 14. The Lopes return to action on Thursday as they host NM State.

SFA TOPS SEATTLE U 86-57

Tyler McCliment-Call led SFA with 17 points, which tied her season high. Angel Scott finished with 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. Jordan Harrison and Aiyana Johnson both scored 10 points against the Redhawks. Avery Brittingham led SFA with 10 rebounds and was one point away from a double double. Harrison led the team with five assists, followed by Destini Lombard with three.

UTAH TECH UNBEATEN AT HOME

Utah Tech is now 12-5, 4-2 in confernce play and is the lone WAC team with an unbeaten home record. The Wolverines are 6-0 at home and are currently on a three-game winning streak. Utah Tech will closeout the month of January with three straight home games beginning with Southern Utah on Jan. 19 followed by Tarleton on Jan. 26 and Seattle U on Jan. 28.

THE WAC IN THE NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS

In the latest NCAA DI national statistics rankings that were released on Jan. 17, Grand Canyon remains 2nd in steals per game at 13.9 and is now 21st in turnover margin (5.47) along with being 6th in turnovers forced per game (23.24). Sam Houston remains 2nd in offensive rebounds per game at 18.3. California Baptist currently ranks 4th in three-point field goals per game with 29.3 followed by Abilene Christian in the 14th spot with 26.7 and UTRGV ranked 20th at 26.0. Sam Houston is now ranked 22nd in total rebounds per game with 42.87 and Southern Utah is ranked 23rd in the same category at 42.75, along with California Baptist ranked 44th at 41.25. NM State is ranked in three different categories, ranking 40th in total steals per game (10.3), 48th in turnover margin (4.11) and 49th in turnovers forced per game at 19.50.
