ARLINGTON, Texas
– The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) will be well represented at the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Virginia on ESPNU. Three full WAC member teams and an additional standout individual student-athlete earned bids to the national meet following strong performances in regional competition at various sites on Nov. 10.

WAC men’s team champion California Baptist placed fourth at the NCAA West Region meet and was an at-large selection into the NCAA Men’s Championship 10K. Valentin Soca was the top CBU runner in the regional meet, clocking a time of 29:02.0 to finish in third place. The Lancers are aiming to become the first men’s team representing the conference to finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships since SMU placed 21st in 2002. CBU was a mainstay atop the West Region rankings throughout the regular season and checked in 14th in the most recent USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ Poll on Nov. 13.

On the women’s side, reigning WAC women’s team champion Utah Valley and conference runner-up CBU each captured at-large team berths into the NCAA Women’s Championship 6K. CBU matched its men’s squad with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA West Region meet, while Utah Valley placed fifth in the NCAA Mountain Region competition. WAC champion Greta Karinauskaite paced the Lancers at regionals with a runner-up time of 19:12.4, as the Wolverines were led by Morgan Nokes in 12th place at 19:49.0. CBU was ranked 21st in the most recent USTFCCA NCAA DI Coaches’ Poll, with Utah Valley just behind ranked 22nd in the Nov. 13 poll.

UT Arlington’s Matro Jepkemboi, the WAC Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year, continued a sensational debut campaign with a third-place individual finish at the NCAA South Central Region meet on Nov. 10 to earn automatic qualification into the NCAA Women’s Championship 6K. Jepkemboi will be one of 38 unattached women’s student-athletes competing in the national championship 6K and, along with entrants from CBU and Utah Valley, will attempt to join the 19 WAC women’s individual cross country student-athletes who have earned a top 25 NCAA individual finish since 1990.
