RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The semifinal round was highlighted by a pair of upsets as No. 4 Grand Canyon and No. 3 Seattle U advanced to the championship of the 2023 WAC Women’s Soccer Tournament. Grand Canyon defeated No. 1 Utah Valley 2-1 and Seattle U bested No. 2 California Baptist 2-1.

Grand Canyon and Seattle U will battle in the WAC Championship for an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
No. 4 Grand Canyon 2, No. 1 Utah Valley 1

In a defensive battle, Utah Valley held a 15-14 edge in shots against Grand Canyon, though the Lopes finished ahead 6-3 in shots on frame.
 
A Utah Valley own goal caused GCU to earn an early 1-0 lead at 24:50. In the second half, Utah Valley’s Ruby Hladek responded with a header on a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1. With just over two minutes left to spare in regulation, Lindsay Prokop secured the game-winning goal assisted by Bekah Valdez. The Lopes advanced to their second WAC Championship in program history.

WAC Freshman of the Year Kassidy Kirgan kept the Redhawks alive with a career-high nine  saves on 10 shots faced. WAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Kait Raffensperger scored her third goal of the season to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead at 34:44. In the second half, Kaylee Coatney tallied an unassisted goal for the Seattle U insurance goal at 57:15.
 
California Baptist’s Sonja Lux scored on a penalty kick in the bottom left corner of the net at the 80’ mark to keep the Lancers in the match. California Baptist would fall in a tough battle as the Redhawks will make its nineth WAC Championship appearance in the last 11 years.
