ARLINGTON, Texas – California Baptist held the top spot in the overall standings of the 2023-24 Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup following the fall 2023 competition season (
FULL STANDINGS BREAKDOWN AVAILABLE HERE).
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in a countable 14 of the conference's 20 men's and women's sponsored sports from an academic year. Points are awarded by aggregate scoring based on regular season and/or championship finishes depending on the sport and the number of institutions that sponsor the sport. An institution that does not sponsor a specific sport does not receive any points.
Only the regular season was counted for the sports of soccer, volleyball and football (WAC members compete in the football-only United Athletic Conference) during the fall of 2023. For the sport of cross country, points were determined using the WAC Championship results based on the per sport scoring system. Affiliates are used as a placeholder in the standings or championship results but are not scored in the overall Commissioner’s Cup standings. Any team that earned an NCAA AQ from a WAC Championship was also awarded two points, along with a two-point bonus per round to any team that advanced in NCAA Championship play.
California Baptist registered 54.2 points to lead the fall cup standings thanks to a conference championship in men’s cross country and a runner-up finish in the men’s soccer regular season (tournament champion), along with bonus points for advancement in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. The Lancers added runner-up showings in women’s cross country and in the regular-season women’s soccer standings.
Utah Valley checked in with 46.5 points and in second place in the standings on the strength of capturing the conference women’s cross country title at Zoe Park in Abilene. The Wolverines finished second at the men’s cross country championship and were the top seed in the women’s soccer tournament following a 7-0-2 conference regular season.
Grand Canyon sat in third place with 37.4 points after the fall following strong finishes and tournament championships in women’s soccer and volleyball. The Lopes earned bonus points in each sport as the WAC’s automatic NCAA tournament qualifier.
Utah Tech was in fourth place with 34.6 points, Southern Utah was fifth with 33.4 points, Seattle U was sixth with 30.8 points, UT Arlington and Stephen F. Austin were tied for seventh with 25.0 points, Tarleton State was ninth with 24.5 points, Abilene Christian was 10th with 22.0 points and UTRGV was 11th with 17.2 points to wrap up the fall 2023 season.
