ARLINGTON, Texas – Grand Canyon’s Gabe McGlothan and UT Arlington’s Phillip Russell have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week, for the game week ending on Sunday, Dec. 17.
 
McGlothan, a redshirt senior forward, earned his second straight WAC weekly top player nod with his second double-double in three starts for the Lopes. McGlothan poured in 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds (four offensive) in a 91-63 win for the Lopes over Portland on Dec. 16 during the Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix. McGlothan connected on a season-high 10 field goals (10-of-17, 58.8 percent) and added an assist, a blocked shot and a steal to his stat line against Portland.
 
Russell, a junior transfer guard, made his UT Arlington debut against Air Force on Dec. 16 during the US LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. Russell poured in 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 13 points in the second half, and added a pair of assists down the stretch in the Mavericks win.
