TicketSmarter WAC Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced
Arlington, Texas – Tarleton’s Katy Schaefer and Grace Garcia have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, for the game week ending on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Schaefer, a junior infielder from Sweeny, Texas, hit .650 (13-20) with nine RBI's and three runs, blasting one home run and four doubles, plus she was walked twice in Tarleton’s 7-0 week with wins over Prairie View A&M (twice), Creighton, Northern Colorado, Akron and Texas A&M-Commerce. Schaefer posted an on-base percentage of .682 last week, batted 1.000 in three games of the seven-game stretch and closed the final two games going 3-for-3 in each with two doubles and four RBI’s. Schaefer hit .667 or better in five of the seven games and had multiple hits in four of the seven games, including three games with 3+ hits. On the season, Schaefer leads the team in batting average (.500), OPS (1.320), RBI (tied at 12), hits (tied at 17), total bases (27) and slugging percentage (.794).
Garcia, a senior from Leawood, Kansas, capped off her three appearances by pitching a perfect game on Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce, the second perfect game in Tarleton’s program history. In Garcia’s three appearances, including two starts, Garcia went 3-0 with an ERA of 0.00 over 13.2 innings, allowing zero runs on five hits, with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. Garcia pitched two shutouts and improved to 4-0 on the season. On Sunday, Garcia pitched a perfect game, going 18 up and 18 down with five strikeouts, throwing the second perfect game in Tarleton’s history. In Garcia’s first start of the week, she pitched a shutout, going seven innings of scoreless softball, allowing just five hits and no walks. In Garcia’s second appearance of the week, Garcia came in as a reliver in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied at 3-3.
