SFA LEADS IN WAC RESUME SEEDING RANKING

In the latest WAC Resume Seeding System ranking on Feb. 19, Stephen F. Austin remained at the top of the conference seeding with a 22-5 overall record and 12-3 mark in WAC play to post 5.84 points. Other teams with positive point values include Southern Utah (17-8; 13-1 WAC; 3.39 points), Grand Canyon (18-7; 10-4 WAC; 1.99 points), California Baptist (15-11; 11-4 WAC; 0.89 points) and Utah Tech (16-9; 8-6 WAC; 0.39 points.

SEVEN TEAMS HAVE CLINCHED A BERTH IN WAC TOURNAMENT

With two weeks of conference play remaining in the 2022-23 WAC basketball season, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Grand Canyon, California Baptist, Utah Tech, Sam Houston and NM State have all clinched a berth in the upcoming 2023 Hercules Tires WAC Basketball Tournament. The WAC Resume Seeding System will determine the final seeding of all teams in advance of the tournament, as the top-four seeded teams on both the men’s and women’s side will earn a bye to the quarterfinal round at The Orleans Arena. First-round games will take place at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay. 

SOUTHERN UTAH REMAINS UNDEFEATED AT HOME IN WAC PLAY

Southern Utah remains the only undefeated team at home in conference play after a 67-59 win over Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 18. The Thunderbirds were led by Lizzy Williamson and Megan Jensen who both finished with 16 points, respectively. Williamson also tallied a game leading 15 rebounds along with two blocks and to steals. Southern Utah has four games left in the regular season with two being at home.

CBU ON FOUR GAME WINNING STREAK

California Baptist is currently on a four-game winning streak dating back to Feb. 9 with a two-point win over Abilene Christian. The Lancers have also secured wins over Tarleton (Feb. 11), Utah Valley (Feb. 16), and NM State (Feb. 18). With three games remaining in the regular season, CBU currently sits in third place in WAC standings having already clinching a berth in the conference tournament.

UTA'S JACOBS IS NOW TOP TEN IN STEALS NATIONALLY

UT Arlington’s Starr Jacobs is now ranked 7th in the nation in steals. Jacobs averages 3.19 steals per game which also ranks her 10th in the nation. Jacobs is coming off another huge week of play where she was named the TicketSmarter WAC Player of the Week after averaging 27.5 points per game, 16.5 rebounds per game along with four steals per game. Jacobs led UTA to 106-102 double overtime win over Sam Houston with a career-high 35 points, career-high 20 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.

THE WAC IN NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS

In the latest NCAA DI national statistics rankings that were released on Feb. 20, Grand Canyon is 4th in steals per game at 13.0 and is now 38th in turnover margin (4.04) along with being 9th in turnovers forced per game (21.28). Sam Houston is now 4th in offensive rebounds per game at 17.4. California Baptist jumped one spot to 4th in three-point field goals per game with 28.0 followed by Abilene Christian in the 21st spot with 25.6 and UTRGV ranked 29th at 25.0. Southern Utah is now ranked 22nd in total rebounds per game with 42.16 and Sam Houston is ranked 24th at 41.83 followed by California Baptist at 30th with 41.38.
