Pharr, Texas– The Western Athletic Conference announced the 2023 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Pre-Championship Coaches Polls, as voted on by the eight women's head coaches and six men’s head coaches in the league. Nine-time defending champion Northern Arizona was selected to take home the women’s title while defending men’s champion UNLV is the pick to win the championship for a third consecutive year on the men’s side.
NAU received all seven possible first-place votes and 49 points. Grand Canyon followed the Lumberjacks with 42 points. Northern Colorado finished third as it tallied 31 points. NM State collected 29 total points and the final first place vote earning fourth place in the poll while California Baptist garnered 25 points, placing them in fifth. Utah Tech came in just behind the Lancers with 20 points for sixth and Idaho landed in seventh as they earned 15 points. Seattle U rounded out the poll with seven points.
UNLV was picked as the favorite to win the men’s conference championship, receiving all five possible first-place votes and 25 points. Grand Canyon collected the remaining first place vote to earn 20 total points and second place in the poll. Air Force finished third as it tallied 14 points while California Baptist garnered 13 points, placing them in fourth. Wyoming came in just behind the Lancers with 10 points for fifth and Seattle U landed in sixth as they earned five points.
The 2023 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships will be held in Pharr, Texas at the City of Pharr Natatorium starting on Wed. Feb. 22. The facility features an Olympic-size, eight-lane, 50-meter swimming pool that can also feature 22 25-yard lanes, and a separate diving pool that includes five platforms and four springboards.
