ARLINGTON, Texas – Abilene Christian’s Maleeah Langstaff and UT Arlington’s Taleyah Jones have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Women’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, for the game week ending on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Langstaff, a graduate forward from Ashville, North Carolina, scored a career-high 34 points on 14-21 shooting. Langstaff set ACU Division I program records with 34 points and 14 field goals made and helped upset Southern Utah, the top team in the WAC standings, on Thursday night in overtime. Langstaff hit three triples and grabbed eight rebounds in 42 minutes.
Jones, a guard from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, poured in 22 points along with five rebounds and two assists in a road win over Grand Canyon, where she shot 8-of-12 from the field. Jones opened the week with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting at New Mexico State. Jones buried two critical 3-pointers in the second half at GCU, the first with 6:36 left in the third quarter after Grand Canyon opened the second half on an 8-2 run and the second one just one minute into the fourth quarter after GCU had scored the first four points. Jones has averaged 15.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting .491 from the field over the past five games.
