TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Women’s and Men’s Athletes of the Week Announced
ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton’s women’s singles player Martha Makantasi and women’s doubles team Ximena Morales and Laure Razet have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Players of the Week. UTRGV’s men’s singles player Emilien Burnel has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Players of the Week, for the competition week ending on Feb. 6.
Makantasi, a junior from Metamorfosi, Greece, went 1-0 in the No. 1 flight this past week, defeating Oral Roberts’ Sasha Lebedeva in straight sets 7-5 6-4. Tarleton won four of their last five singles matches coming from behind in a 4-3 victory at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Friday night to improve to 2-2 on the year. Makantasi has won two straight this year to improve to 2-1 in singles play, all at the No. 1 position. Dating back to last season, Makantasi has won seven of her last eight singles matches and 12 of her last 14.
Morales, a freshman from Guatemala and Razet, a freshman from Verneuil-sur-Seine, France won their lone doubles match on the week in the No. 3 flight over Oral Roberts’ Arina Sorokina and Zere Iskakova 6-4. Tarleton won 4-3 at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Friday night to improve to 2-2 on the year. Morales and Razet, both Texan freshmen, are 2-0 in doubles as a pair this season. Together, Morales and Razet have won 12 out of 19 games in their two doubles matches this year.
Burnel, a junior from La Teste-De-Bush, France, went 2-0 playing in the No. 1 flight for the Vaqueros. On Friday, Burnel dominated his match against Tyler Junior College’s Diego Dalisay, the No. 2 ranked singles player in JUCO by the ITA, to take a 6-2, 6-1 win. On Saturday, Burnel defeated Dakotah Bobo from Southern Miss 6-0, 6-4. Burnel is now 5-4 on the season and leads the team in wins.
