TicketSmarter WAC Baseball Players Of The Week Announced
ARLINGTON, Texas – Grand Canyon’s Jacob Wilson and Zach Thornton have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, for the game week ending on Sunday, March 12.
Wilson, a junior shortstop, tore the cover off the ball for GCU in a 3-1 week that included a conference series sweep of NM State. Wilson batted .706 (12-for-17) with three extra-base hits, six RBI, a 1.000 slugging percentage and six runs scored, to go along with a perfect fielding percentage and six assists in 11 chances. Wilson had three hits apiece in games one and two of the series on March 10-11 before going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs in an 11-7 win to complete the sweep on March 12.
Thornton, a junior transfer left-hander from Barton Community College, improved to 2-0 on the season for GCU after spinning a gem in the opening game against NM State on March 10. Thornton tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out 11 Aggies on 98 pitches in a 6-1 victory for the Lopes.
