TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Women’s and Men’s Athletes of the Week Announced
Arlington, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s women’s singles player Ksenia Mamontova and Tarleton’s women’s doubles team Martha Makantasi and Clara Sobius have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Players of the Week. Abilene Christian’s men’s singles player Daniel Morozov and UTRGV’s men’s doubles team Emilien Burnel and Borna Devald have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Players of the Week, for the competition week ending on Mar. 14.
Mamontova, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, went 3-1 in singles play this last week. Mamontova secured victories against Northwestern State, Grambling, and University of Richmond.
Makantasi, a junior from Metamorfosi, Greece, and Sobius, a freshman from Quebec, Canada, shut out the pair of Olga Bienzobas and Ana Rodrigues 6-0 at No. 2. This was the first time the duo played together this season, 1-0 as a team. Makantasi and Sobius are each 5-3 in doubles on the year. Sobius has won four straight doubles matches, a career long streak and the best active winning streak on the team.
Morozov, a sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, defeated Texas A&M’s Mathis Ross 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 in No. 2 singles last week.
Burnel, a junior from La Teste De Bush, France, and Devald, a sophomore from Zagreb, Croatia, is riding a four-match winning streak after going 2-0 in the No. 1 flight with back-to-back hard-earned tiebreaker victories in UTRGV’s first pair of matches in California last week. Burnel and Devald defeated Hawaii’s top duo of Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie 7-6 (7-3) on Saturday, then followed that strong performance up with an impressive 7-6 (7-5) win over Nevada’s top duo of Matheo Coupu and Delmas N’Tcha on Sunday.
