Sam Houston, Seattle U’s Bruce Lead After Opening Round Of 2023 WAC Women’s Golf Championship

2023 WAC Women's Golf Championship Round 1 Results

BLAINE, Wash. – Top-seeded Sam Houston held the top spot on the leaderboard following the first round of the 2023 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Women’s Golf Championship on Sunday at Semiahmoo Country Club. The Bearkats fired a five-over-par 293 to take a three-stroke lead after the opening 18 holes.

The field averaged 77.87 over 60 completed rounds on the first day of play, with each of the 18 holes at Semiahmoo checking with an over par stroke average. The 516-yard par-5 13th hole wound up as the easiest hole in round one, yielding seven birdies and a +0.08 stroke average.

California Baptist and Seattle U both shared second place after the first round with matching scores of 8-over-par 296. Grand Canyon fired 299 (+11) to sit alone in fourth place and defending champion NM State carded a round of 301 to place solo fifth at 13-over.

Seattle U’s Samantha Bruce was the individual leader after day one thanks to a 2-under-par 70, which featured four birdies as part of a back nine 33 (-3). Sam Houston’s Leah Alberto joined Bruce in red numbers with a 1-under 70, birdieing three of her final seven holes on an inward nine score of 34. Sam Houston’s Jennifer Herbst and California Baptist’s Hailey Loh shared third place at even par 72, and five players were tied for fifth place with matching 1-over scores of 73.

The second round of the 2023 WAC Women’s Golf Championship is set to begin at 8 a.m. PT on Monday at Semiahmoo Country Club. Live results are available via Golfstat.com.
