Sam Houston Leads Wire-To-Wire To Capture 2023 WAC Women’s Golf Championship

BLAINE, Wash. – Sam Houston put the finishing touches on a wire-to-wire conference title, taking home the 2023 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Women’s Golf Championship on a picturesque Tuesday afternoon at Semiahmoo Country Club. The Bearkats came home with a 10-over-par 298 to win by seven strokes at 19-over 883 (293-292-298).

It was the first WAC team women’s golf championship for Sam Houston after the Bearkats finished as the runner-up to NM State in 2022. Seattle U took home outright second place at 27-over-par, 891 (296-299-296). NM State placed third at 892 (301-292-299, +28), California Baptist was fourth at 895 (296-296-303) and Grand Canyon took fifth at 904 (299-313-292, +40).

The field averaged 77.65 over 60 completed rounds in the third round of play, with the overall tournament scoring average checking in at 77.60 over 54 holes. The 516-yard par-5 13th hole remained the easiest holes on the course, yielding a +0.10 stroke average with 22 birdies during the tournament.

California Baptist’s Hailey Loh started the day tied for fourth in the individual draw and posted an even par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 2-over-par 218 (72-74-72). Loh took the solo tournament title in a four-way playoff after winning the second playoff hole against Sam Houston’s Jennifer Herbst (72-73-73). Seattle U’s Aaryanna Morris (73-73-72) and Southern Utah’s Tsara Ralamboarison (73-70-75) were also members of the playoff and joined Herbst in a tie for second place. NM State’s Alison Gastelum was in solo fifth place at 3-over-par 219 (73-76-70).
