WAC 2023 Men’s Tennis Award Winners Announced
ARLINGTON, Texas – The major award winners and all-conference teams for the 2023 WAC men’s tennis season were revealed on Wednesday. Abilene Christian’s Dario Kmet captured WAC Player of the Year, UT Arlington’s Santiago Giamichelle was named Freshman of the Year and Juan Nunez from Abilene Christian earned Coach of the Year honors.
Kmet posted a 10-6 singles record and a 10-7 doubles mark playing at the number one court during the regular season for ACU. Kmet was named the conference singles player of the week on two occasions and compiled a perfect 5-0 record at top singles during conference play.
Giamichelle registered a 17-12 singles record and a 15-10 doubles record in his freshman season for UTA, with most of his play at the second court. His singles record included a 5-0 performance in conference matches, with four of the conference wins occurring in straight sets.
Nunez guided ACU to a 13-10 overall record and a 4-1 mark in WAC matches to lead the Wildcats to the second seed in the conference tournament. ACU won five of its final six matches during the regular season and fashioned an 8-1 record at home.
UTA led all players with four total all-conference singles selections, including three players on the first team. ACU added three singles honorees, while NM State and Seattle U both had two singles players recognized.
