TicketSmarter WAC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes Of The Week Announced
ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington’s Joel Bengtsson, Stephen F. Austin’s Branson Ellis, Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi and UTRGV’s Marlene Gutierrez have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, for the competition week ending on Sunday, April 2.
Bengtsson, a senior, was seventh in the finals of the men’s 110-meter hurdles during the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29-April 1. During the preliminary heats Bengtsson crossed the line in a wind-aided 13.54 in section two before posting an official 13.70 in the finals to log the fastest time of the season in the WAC and rank 17th in NCAA Division I as of April 5.
Ellis, a senior, captured the men’s pole vault event win representing SFA during the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29-April 1. Ellis cleared 5.86m (19-2.75) on his second attempt to establish a WAC outdoor record and tie for the NCAA lead in the pole vault as of April 5.
Kemboi, a senior, ran one of the 10 fastest women’s 10,000-meter races in NCAA outdoor history, finishing second at the Stanford Invitational that was held March 31-April 1. Kemboi posted a conference-leading time of 32:03.30 to rank second in the nation in the distance as of April 5.
Gutierrez, a graduate student, placed eighth overall and was the seventh collegiate finisher in the women’s hammer throw at the Bobcat Invitational on March 30-April 1. Gutierrez covered 61.80m (202-9.0) on her second attempt for the best throw in the WAC and the number 23 mark in the NCAA as of April 5.
