ARLINGTON, Texas – Grand Canyon claimed its sixth Western Athletic Conference (WAC) baseball regular-season title by officially earning the number one seed for the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament on the conference season’s final day. The Lopes will headline eight teams competing in the tournament, scheduled for May 23-27 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona.
Grand Canyon logged a 36-19 (22-7 WAC, .759) mark during the regular season and won its last 13 games in a row overall to storm to the top of the WAC standings. The Lopes finished the 2023 regular season with a three-game sweep at home against California Baptist to lock in the one seed. Grand Canyon previously captured the 2021 WAC tournament crown after finishing as co-champions in that regular season with California Baptist.
Sam Houston (33-22, 22-8 WAC, .733) landed in the second spot in the tournament seeding after dropping two of three games at Tarleton to close out the regular season. No. 3 Utah Valley (31-22, 16-12 WAC, .571), No. 4 Seattle U (21-30, 17-13 WAC, .567), No. 5 Abilene Christian (33-22, 16-14 WAC, .533), No. 6 UT Arlington (26-27, 16-14 WAC, .533), No. 7 UTRGV (29-24, 15-14 WAC, .517) and No. 8 California Baptist (28-28, 15-15 WAC, .500) round out the 2023 tournament field.
The 2023 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament will begin with a pair of opening round games featuring No. 5 Abilene Christian and No. 8 California Baptist at 1 p.m. MST and No. 6 UT Arlington against No. 7 UTRGV at 4 p.m. MST on May 23 at Hohokam Stadium. No. 3 Utah Valley will face No. 4 Seattle U at 9 a.m. MST on May 24 before the first elimination game of the tournament takes place between the non-advancing teams from day one at noon MST. No. 2 Sam Houston will then play the highest available seed remaining from the opening round at 4 p.m. MST and No. 1 Grand Canyon will match up with the lowest available remaining seed at 7 p.m. MST on May 24.
The championship game of the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament is scheduled for May 27 at 3 p.m. MST, with the ‘if necessary’ game (based on tournament progression in earlier rounds) to follow at 6 p.m. MST.
