ARLINGTON, Texas – Sam Houston, the winner of the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament, officially received the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on Monday.
The No. 3 seeded Bearkats (38-23) were one of four teams to qualify for the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, also featuring No. 5 national seed and host LSU, No. 2 seed Oregon State and No. 4 seed Tulane.
Sam Houston is set to make its 13th all-time appearance at NCAA Regionals after capturing the 2023 WAC tournament championship with a pair of championship round wins against Utah Valley on May 27 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona. The Bearkats previously reached the 2017 NCAA Tallahassee Super Regional after defeating regional host Texas Tech twice to advance from that season’s NCAA Lubbock Regional.
Since 1963 WAC programs have won a combined 194 games in the NCAA Baseball Championship. Arizona (1963, 1966, 1970, 1976 National Champion), Arizona State (1964, 1965 National Champion, 1967 National Champion, 1969 National Champion, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977 National Champion, 1978), Brigham Young (1968, 1971), Hawai’I (1980), Rice (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 National Champion) and Fresno State (2008 National Champion) have previously represented the WAC at the College World Series.
