10 WAC Student-Athletes Qualify For The 2023 NCAA DI Track And Field Championships

NCAA West Preliminary Results

ARLINGTON, Texas – A successful regional preliminary meet provided nine student-athletes representing the WAC with qualifying times and marks for the 2023 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships. Select athletes from WAC institutions competed at the NCAA West preliminary from May 24-27 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California.

Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi qualified for the national championship meet as the first-place finisher in both the women’s 5000-meter (15:30.25) and the women’s 10,000-meter (32:05.56) events at the NCAA West preliminary. Kemboi was the top ranked competitor thus far this season in the 5000-meter (15:20.67) and ranked third in the national 10,000-meter (32:03.30) standings following regional preliminary meets. Joining Kemboi in the 5000-meter field at the NCAA Championships meet will be California Baptist’s Yasna Petrova, who finished 11th at the NCAA West preliminary with a time of 15:45.14.

Greta Karinauskaite from CBU was the top competitor in the West region in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, earning a regional championship win with a time of 9:26.88. Karinauskaite’s time was at the top of the NCAA outdoor performance list for the 2023 season following the preliminary meets.

Additional women’s NCAA Championship qualifiers from the West preliminary representing the WAC included Stephen F. Austin’s Nissi Kabongo (fifth, high jump, 1.82m/5-11.5) and Grand Canyon’s Keira Christie-Galloway (10th, 100m hurdles, 13.08). Although multi events are not contested during the preliminary meets, Stephen F. Austin's Angel Richmore will join fellow WAC national meet competitors as the 10th conference qualifier by way of the 17th-ranked heptathlon score in the nation (5,691 points) recorded earlier this year.

On the men’s side, Stephen F. Austin’s Branson Ellis tied for second in the pole vault at the NCAA West preliminary with a clearance of 5.40m (17-8.50) to punch his ticket to the national championship meet. Ellis ranked third in the post-regional NCAA outdoor performance list with a top mark of 5.86m (19-2.75) earlier this season.

Joining Ellis from WAC institutions in men’s national meet events will be Southern Utah’s Cedar English (fifth, long jump, 7.72m/25-4.0) and Astley Davis (ninth, triple jump, 15.73m/51-7.25), and Stephen F. Austin's Izac Canchola (11th, javelin, 68.81m/225-9.0).
