ARLINGTON, Texas – A successful showing at the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships officially completed the 2022-23 academic year for WAC student-athletes. Of the 10 competitors representing the WAC who qualified for the NCAA national meet, conference athletes secured one individual national championship, a pair of runner-up trophies and four combined All-America First-Team scrolls from June 7-10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi added another chapter to a stellar season and career on the track with the Wolverines, as the reigning WAC medalist in the women’s outdoor 10,000-meter run established a facility record in capturing the 10K national championship on June 8. Kemboi, who entered the national meet with the third-ranked time in the women’s 10K in Division I during the regular season, broke from the field late in the race to run the fastest women’s 10K race at the home track of the University of Texas program in 32:39.08.
Kemboi became the first WAC student-athlete to capture an individual national championship in outdoor track & field since Hawai’i’s Amber Kaufman won the women’s high jump at the 2010 NCAA meet. Kemboi added a runner-up finish in the women’s 5000-meter championship (15:39.57) on June 10 to become the first WAC women’s student-athlete to earn First-Team All-America honors in two separate individual events at the same NCAA Outdoor Championships meet since 2001.
Greta Karinauskaite from California Baptist added the second runner-up showing of the week for WAC student-athletes, placing second in the final of the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase on June 10. Karinauskaite’s time of 9:30.85 in the championship race provided CBU with its first All-American in outdoor track & field in the Division I era.
Southern Utah’s Astley Davis brought home the fourth All-America First-Team plaudits of the week for the WAC during the men’s triple jump on June 9, posting a personal best mark of 16.17m (53-0.75) to finish in eighth place in the nation.
