ARLINGTON, Texas – Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi added another chapter to a stellar season and career on the track with the Wolverines, as the reigning WAC medalist in the women’s outdoor 10,000-meter run established a facility record in capturing the 10K national championship on Thursday night at the 2023 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Kemboi, who entered the national meet with the third-ranked time in the women’s 10K in Division I during the regular season, broke from the field late in the race to run the fastest women’s 10K race at the home track of the University of Texas program in 32:39.08. Kemboi became the first WAC student-athlete to capture an individual national championship in outdoor track & field since Hawai’i’s Amber Kaufman won the women’s high jump at the 2010 NCAA meet.
Kemboi is also scheduled to race in the women’s 5000-meter championship as the fastest national qualifier in the event on June 10.
Another stellar Thursday showing was put forth by Greta Karinauskaite from California Baptist in the semifinal round of the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. The owner of the top national time in the event entering the NCAA Championships, Karinauskaite officially punched her ticket to the championship final on June 10 with the second-fastest qualifying time of 9:40.87.
