HISTORIC SEASONS FOR KEMBOI, KARINAUSKAITE SET STAGE FOR NCAA MEET
California Baptist’s Greta Karinauskaite and Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi have been standouts for their respective teams, and the WAC overall, throughout the entire 2023 outdoor season and will have a chance to showcase their skills among the nation’s best in Austin. Kemboi arrives at the NCAA Championships as the WAC all-time outdoor performance leader in the 5000-meter (15:20.67) and 10,000-meter (32:03.30) events after stellar showings earlier this season, ranking first and third in the nation, respectively. Karinauskaite logged a conference record time of 9:26.88 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA West preliminary to rank first in NCAA Division I ahead of the national championships meet.

ALL-TIME WAC OUTDOOR INDIVIDUAL NCAA CHAMPIONS
With CBU’s Greta Karinauskaite and Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi ranked at the top of their respective events entering the 2023 NCAA Championships, both student-athletes will look to join the lineage of WAC outdoor national champions this week in Austin.

Since 2000, WAC student-athletes have captured a total of seven women’s and 10 men’s individual and relay track & field national titles at the NCAA outdoor meet. The most recent men’s outdoor national champions representing the WAC was UTEP’s Mircea Bogdan in the 3000-meter steeplechase (8:27.29) and Boise State’s Gabriel Wallin in the javelin (78.76m) in 2005, while Hawai’i’s Amber Kaufman won the women’s high jump (1.86m) in 2010.

MORE ALL-TIME ALL-AMERICA PERFORMERS ON THE WAY?
WAC student-athletes will attempt to add to the eight total All-America honors that were earned by conference competitors at the 2022 NCAA Championships during the 2023 edition of the national meet.

Since 2011, all student-athletes who finish among the top eight in a given NCAA final have earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) DI First-Team All-America accolades. Athletes who place 9-16 at the national meet are recognized as USTFCCCA Second-Team All-Americans.

Clayton Fritsch from Sam Houston and Branson Ellis from Stephen F. Austin each landed on the 2022 first team in the men’s pole vault, while Stephen F. Austin’s Asani Hylton and Abilene Christian’s JJ Ply claimed first-team honors in the men’s decathlon. Cord Neal from SFA was among the WAC second-team All-Americans after a top finish in the men’s javelin. ACU’s Annina Brandenburg (women’s shot put) was on the 2022 outdoor All-America first team, with Utah Valley’s Everlyn Kemboi (women’s 10K) on the second team.
