2023 WAC WSOC Release Week 2

FIVE TEAMS UNBEATEN INTO WEEK TWO

A total of five WAC women’s soccer teams enter the second full weekend of play with unbeaten records in nonconference play. Abilene Christian climbed to the top of the league standings at 2-0 with a pair of shutout wins, followed by 1-0 California Baptist. Utah Tech, Tarleton State and Utah Valley each added matching 1-0-1 records as of Aug. 23.

WEBBER ROLLS IN SEASON’S OPENING WEEKEND TO WAC OPOTW
Utah Valley junior forward Faith Webber was the conference’s leading scorer and WAC Offensive Player of the Week after tallying three goals and an assist for seven points last weekend for 1-0-1 UVU. Webber opened her 2023 goal account in the 59th minute of a 1-1 draw at Hawai’I on Aug. 17 and scored twice in the 50th and 55th minutes of a 5-1 win against Houston Christian on Aug. 20.

HOLLOMAN HELPS ANCHOR ACU DEFENSE TO PAIR OF CLEAN SHEETS
Abilene Christian sophomore defender McCarly Holloman and the Wildcat defense played a major role in lifting ACU to just its second 2-0 start to a women’s soccer season at the Division I level. ACU blanked Lamar 1-0 away from home before traveling to Texas Southern for a 3-0 victory last weekend. Holloman picked up top conference defensive plaudits of the week after playing all 180 minutes on a backline that allowed no goals and yielded just nine total shots on target.

UTAH VALLEY WITH THE TOP SCORING ATTACK FOR THE WAC WEEK ONE
Bolstered by conference offensive player of the week Faith Webber, Utah Valley enjoyed a solid team offensive performance during its two-match road swing in Hawai’i to open the 2023 campaign. The Wolverines tallied a total of 19 points across their two starts, which included six goals and seven total assists, to lead all WAC members.

STRONG DEFENSE EARNS RESULTS
Perhaps not surprising that after week one, the five teams with unbeaten records in the WAC each allowed an average of one goal or fewer per match to begin the season. Along with the two shutouts of Abilene Christian, Utah Tech and Tarleton State allowed an average of 0.50 goals per match across two starts, with California Baptist and Utah Valley joining Grand Canyon at an even 1.00 goals allowed as of Aug. 23.

RANKED TEAMS ON TAP FOR WEEK TWO
Key matchups awaiting WAC members in the second full weekend of the season include No. 19 Clemson traveling to Utah Valley on Aug. 24 and No. 13 Santa Clara at Seattle U on Aug. 27.
