2023 WAC MSOC Release Week 4

SEATTLE U UNBEATEN STREAK REACHES FIVE

Seattle U continued its early season momentum by running its unbeaten streak to five straight matches with a 1-1 draw at Gonzaga on Sept. 10. The Redhawks were atop the WAC nonconference table at 4-1-1 entering play on Sept. 13, outscoring opponents 11-6 across six contests to begin the season.

UTRGV, GCU IN HOT PURSUIT IN NONCON PLAY
The closest WAC pursuers of Seattle U thus far in the nonconference season have been UTRGV and Grand Canyon, who have each fashioned matching 3-3-0 records as of Sept. 13. UTRGV has won three of its past four matches, most recently blanking Xavier 2-0 at home on Sept. 11, to level its record at .500, while GCU also won three of its past four starts that included back-to-back 3-0 shutouts of Stetson (Sept. 8) and UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 12) in Phoenix.

MUELLER BRACE GIVES CBU FIRST WIN OF ‘23
Defending WAC champion California Baptist picked up its first victory of the 2023 season with a 3-1 triumph at home against CSUN. Senior striker Luis Mueller earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors with a two-goal performance for the Lancers, opening the scoring just 2:16 into the night and adding an insurance free kick goal in the 71st minute to put CBU ahead of CSUN 3-1. Mueller has now accounted for 49 career points (17 goals, 15 assists) in 54 career appearances for CBU.

WAC TEAMS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
As of the latest NCAA Division I men’s soccer national statistics report on Sept. 12, UTRGV ranked second in the country in shot accuracy by logging a .610 average on shot attempts on goal thus far this season. The Vaqueros were also 10th in total goals (13). UNLV checked in fifth (.561) in shot accuracy. Grand Canyon goalkeeper Leon Schmidt ranked second individually in total saves (37) and ninth in saves per match (6.17), and Lopes forward Bright Nutornutsi was eighth in total goals with five. UTRGV forward Kgodiso Sukati was sixth in the nation in match-winning goals (2).

ANOTHER SHOT AT RANKED OPPONENTS FOR THE WAC
Both California Baptist (Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. PT) and Grand Canyon (Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. MST) will each face No. 22 San Diego during the week four slate, while No. 14 Denver is set to travel to Seattle U on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. PT.
