2023 WAC MSOC Release Week 3

SEATTLE U ROCKETS TO THE TOP OF THE WAC STANDINGS

With three straight wins on the nonconference slate, Seattle U claimed the top spot in the WAC men’s soccer standings at 3-1-0 entering week three of the 2023 season. The Redhawks earned back-to-back shutouts against South Florida (2-0) and Cal State Fullerton (2-0) to highlight the current winning streak. UTRGV (2-2-0) and San José State (1-1-2) were both in second place with .500 records entering matches on Sept. 7.

SEATTLE U VETERAN A KEY TO WINNING STREAK
Seattle U forward James Morris had an impactful second week of the season for the Redhawks in wins at Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis, scoring a total of three goals and adding assist for a conference-high seven points. Morris’ penalty in the 70th minute provided the final Seattle U goal in Fullerton and a brace in the 20th and 87th minutes in Davis gave the Redhawks their first and winning goals. Morris, the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week, Morris has scored 49 career points (19 goals, 11 assists) in 50 career matches at Seattle U.

UTRGV SHUTS THE DOOR ON WEEK TWO FOES
UTRGV climbed to an even .500 record on the season with a pair of shutout victories last weekend. The Vaqueros downed Incarnate Word 3-0 on the road before blanking Texas A&M-San Antonio 5-0 at home. UTRGV was the only WAC member to not surrender a goal in the season’s second week, combining for a total of 10 team saves over 180 minutes of match action.

WAC TEAMS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
As of the latest NCAA Division I men’s soccer national statistics report on Sept. 5, UNLV ranked third in the country in shot accuracy by logging a .636 clip on shot attempts on goal thus far this season. UTRGV checked in eighth in shot accuracy (.591) and 10th in total goals (10) after two weeks of play. Grand Canyon goalkeeper Leon Schmidt ranked fifth individually in total saves (24) and eighth in saves per match (6.00).

Key matches to watch on the week three men’s soccer composite schedule in the WAC include Oregon State traveling to Seattle U (7 p.m. PT on ESPN+) and California Baptist welcoming California (7 p.m. PT) on Sept. 7 and UTRGV traveling to Marquette on Sept. 8 (7 p.m. CT).
