CBU STILL LEADS IN WAC RÉSUMÉ SEEDING SYSTEM RANKINGS
California Baptist has 4.18 points in the latest WAC Résumé Seeding System rankings compiled on Jan. 28. The Lancers are in sole possession of second place in the conference standings at 16-2 overall (8-1 WAC). Grand Canyon is close behind with 4.04 points while leading the WAC standings with a 9-1 conference record (17-4 overall). Stephen F. Austin (1.44) is the only other team with a positive point value in the most recent seeding system rankings.
GOOD NEWS, WAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WILL BE ON TV!
The final game of the WAC women’s basketball championship will be shown live on ESPNU at 10:30 a.m. PT on March 16. The 2024 women’s championship contest will mark the first WAC women’s title game to be carried live on linear TV since 2016.
UPSET ALERT
Stephen F. Austin snapped Grand Canyon’s undefeated conference streak with a 59-54 road win over the Lopes. The ‘Jacks held Grand Canyon to a 31.0 field goal percentage and a 23.5 3-point percentage. Destini Lombard led Stephen F. Austin with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Zoe Nelson recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points, 10 rebounds and chipped in two steals. Tyler McCliment-Call tallied a near double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
BARROS WENT BANANAS
California Baptist’s sophomore guard Filipa Barros earned WAC Player of the Week honors after posting back-to-back double-doubles in a home swwep against UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin. She averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and added 5.5 assists per game. Barros earned her first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds against UTRGV on Jan. 25. She then tallied 22 points and 12 rebounds against SFA on Jan. 27.
ADD HER TO THE FRESHMEN TO WATCH LIST
Southern Utah’s freshman forward and WAC Newcomer of the Week Ava Uhrich emerged as one of the conference leading scorers for the week after averaging 20.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game as the Thunderbirds competed against Tarleton State and Abilene Christian. Uhrich tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds against Tarleton State. She then propelled the Southern Utah to victory against Abilene Christian with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds. This marks Uhrich’s sixth double-double of the season and her fifth in WAC play.
NEW WEEK, NEW WARRANTY
Utah Tech’s redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Warren averaged 19.5 points on 56.0 percent shooting (14-25), including a sizzling 53.8 percent (7-13) from the perimeter in the Trailblazers two-game home sweep last week. She also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks. Warren recorded 12 points, four boards, three assists and three steals against Abilene Christian on Jan. 25. She then followed that up with a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State on Jan 27. She scored 15 of those 27 points in the third quarter, during which she went 6-of-7 from the floor with three 3-pointers and outscored the Texans 15-7 by herself. Warren shot 11-of-16 from the floor, including a 5-of-9 clip from the perimeter.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA Division I national statistics report on Jan. 30, three teams were ranked in the top 10 in 3-point attempts per game. Utah checked in at fourth (29.5), Abilene Christian at fifth with 29.2 and California Baptist ranked sixth (28.6). California Baptist ranked fourth in defensive rebounds per game with 32.7, while Utah Tech tied eighth with 31.4. Utah Valley was eighth in bench points per game with 29.7.
