ABILENE, Texas – The semifinal round of the WAC Women’s Soccer Tournament lived up to the hype as both matches ended in dramatic fashion. No. 4 California Baptist played the upset and defeated the WAC regular season champs, Utah Valley, 3-2 and No. 2 Grand Canyon took down No. 3 Seattle U in penalty kicks, 4-2, following a scoreless 90 minutes and double overtime.
Grand Canyon will battle with California Baptist in the WAC Women’s Soccer Championship Saturday, November 9
th at 2 p.m. CT for an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
No. 4 California Baptist 3 – No. 1 Utah Valley 2
Utah Valley jumped to a 2-0 lead before the end of the first half with goals from
Ruby Hladek and
Quincy Bonds as the Wolverines kept the Lancers out of the back of the net for the first 66 minutes.
Jayden Ramirez ignited California Baptist’s comeback with a goal to the top right corner of the net. Ten minutes later,
Ava Westlund worked her way through traffic and got through three defenders to score the game-tying goal. The Lancers scored their third and winning goal when Ramirez assisted the ball backwards to
Kaylee Hauck who sunk the winning shot in the 87
th minute to secure the Lancer’s spot in the conference championship.
Mikayla O’Brien recorded seven saves in the match and kept the Lancers in the game with five saves and no goals allowed in the second half. The semifinal win sends CBU to its first WAC Women’s Soccer Championship match.
No. 2 Grand Canyon 0 – No. 3 Seattle U 0 (GCU Wins on PKs 4-2)
Two of the best defensive teams in the conference took the pitch in the second semifinal match of the day as both teams showed their defensive strengths through regulation and double overtime. Grand Canyon only allowed two shots on goal in the 110 minutes and
Kassidy Kirgan collected nine saves for Seattle U in the match.
Following the double overtime, the match went into penalty kicks. Grand Canyon made three of its first four shots and Seattle U made only two shots in four attempts as
DeAira Jackson made a crucial stop on the Redhawk’s four shot. That allowed
Ani Jensen to make the game-winning penalty kick to send the Lopes to their second straight WAC Women’s Soccer Championship with a chance to repeat as tournament champions.
