ARLINGTON, Texas – Grand Canyon’s
Beau Ankeney and Abilene Christian’s
Iain Campa have been named the
TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, for the game week ending on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Ankeney, a junior infielder, batted .667 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored in a pair of GCU wins during the MLB Desert Invitational. Ankeney led all WAC players during the opening weekend with a 1.444 slugging percentage and 3.00 hits per game, adding the second-most runs scored (2.00) and RBI (2.00) per contest. Ankeney went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored in his season debut in 5-2 win for the Lopes over Georgetown on Feb. 16. Ankeney clubbed his first two career home runs the following day, driving in three runs and scoring three times in an 8-1 rout of Southern California on Feb. 17.
Campa, a junior college transfer right-handed pitcher, made his Division I debut start in the second game of a doubleheader against Northern Illinois on Feb. 16. Campa tossed five innings of one-hit baseball, allowing two baserunners while striking out nine batters on 66 pitches to earn the win in a 12-2 victory for the Wildcats.
