PHARR, Texas – After two days of action of the 2024 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, UNLV leads in the men’s rankings with 393 points, followed by California Baptist with 281 and Grand Canyon with 246 points. On the women’s side, Northern Arizona is in the lead with 379 points, ahead of New Mexico State with 231 points and Northern Colorado women’s is in third with 187.50.
Thursday evening started off with the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay. UNLV’s
Bryson Huey,
George Ratiu,
Cameron Castro and
Steven Butler took first place for the second consecutive year with a time of 1:17.53. Grand Canyon finished second with a time of 1:19.23, while California Baptist placed third (1:20.06).
On the women’s side, California Baptist’s
Naya Koc,
Sofia Maksimova,
Nicole Reynolds and
Emily Drossel placed first in the 200-yard medley relay for the first time since 2020 with a time of 1:31.50. New Mexico State finished second with a 1:31.55 mark. Northern Arizona took third with a time of 1:31.97.
California Baptist’s freshman
Mario De Valle placed first in the men’s 1-meter dive with an impressive 408.20 mark, breaking his own teammate’s
Gael Jiminez conference meet record that was set at last year’s championships (389.40). Jiminez took second place with 388.75 points and Grand Canyon’s
Isaac Poole finished third with 377.65.
In the men’s 500-yard free, California Baptist’s
Mark Kovacsics took first place finishing five seconds ahead of his competitors with a time of 4:18.63. UNLV’s
Cameron Castro placed second with a 4:23.63 mark, while teammate
Hayden Lambert finished third with a time of 4:23.91.
Northern Arizona’s
Madison Rey finished first in the women’s 500-yard free with a time of 4:46.60, while teammate
Casey Craffey took second with a time of 4:49.25. New Mexico State’s
Naomi Slee placed third with a 4:49.67 mark.
UNLV’s
Cooper Kiel took first place in the men’s 200-yard individual medley with a 1:45.75 mark.
Michael Breitbart from UNLV placed second with a time of 1:46.15. Grand Canyon’s
Jonathan Rom finished third with a time of 1:46.25.
In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, Grand Canyon’s
Maria Brunlehner finished first for the third consecutive year with a time of 1:59.58, becoming the second swimmer to three-peat the event, joining
Martina Moravcova (SMU, 1997-1999). New Mexico State’s
Lindsay Puhalski placed second with a 1:59.86 mark. Northern Colorado’s
Katelyn Bergin took third with a time of 2:00.52.
UNLV’s
Bryson Huey placed first in the men’s 50-yard free with a time of 19.23, while teammate
George Ratiu finished second with a 19.44 mark. Grand Canyon’s
Guillermo Carrey took third with a time of 19.61.
California Baptist’s
Sofia Maksimova placed first in the women’s 50-yard free with a time of 21.89, she broke the meet record with her prelims time of 21.79. Idaho’s
Ella Haskins took second with a time of 22.82.
Alison Jackson of Northern Colorado and New Mexico State’s
Emily Dobbins tied for third with a 23.20 mark.
In the women’s 3-meter dive, Northern Arizona swept the podium.
Grace Wesche placed first place with a final score of 320.10.
Mackenna Stocker finished second with 306.30 points, while
Margaret Stocker took third with a final score of 306.25.
The 2024 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships resume Friday with the 400 IM (M/W), 100 fly (M/W), 200 free (M/W), 100 breaststroke (M/W) and 100 backstroke (M/W) prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT. The men’s platform dive will begin at 12:30 p.m. CT. Finals for these events along with the 400-yard medley relay (M/W) will commence at 8:00 p.m. CT.
