Dominant Shutouts Highlight Day 1 of Women’s Tennis Tournament

HARLINGEN, Texas – The women’s portion of the WAC Tennis Tournament saw some dominant shutouts from the top seeds in the tournament at the HEB Tennis Center.
 
The top three seeds in the tournament (Grand Canyon, Tarleton State, and UT Arlington) all notched 4-0 victories against their opponents, while #5 seed Abilene Christian knocked out #4 Seattle U to fight for a championship spot.
 
No. 1 Grand Canyon 4, No. 8 Utah Tech 0
 
The Grand Canyons Lopes wasted no time getting their doubles point early on as they nabbed two 6-1 wins on courts one and three. Natasha Puehse and Santa Strombacha grabbed the win for GCU on court one while Elizaveta Morozova and Iva Sepa secured the win on court three.
 
The Lopes looked even more dominant in the single matches with Puehse and Morozova only dropping one game each in court one and court four, respectively. Valeriia Krokhotina secured the match win for GCU with a clean sweep on court five 6-0, 6-0.
 
No. 5 Abilene Christian 4, No. 4 Seattle U 1
 
Abilene Christian started their day off on the right foot by getting the doubles point after winning courts one and two. Libby Blair and Maryjoe Crisologo won the first doubles match on court two 6-3, followed by Maria Cascos and Masha Vrsalovic winning court one 6-4.
 
ACU’s Andrea Guerrero won her match on court five in a straight set 6-3, 6-2, Cascos pulled off the comeback on court four after falling in the first set 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Blair wrapped up the match for the Wildcats on court six with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback win.
 
Seattle U’s Freshman of the Year, Lamija Avdic, was able to get the court one win for the Redhawks 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
 
No. 3 UT Arlington 4, No. 6 UTRGV 0
 
UT Arlington also notched the doubles point only needing just two courts as Bruna Casasampere and Francisca Vergara nabbed court one 6-1 and Tara Gorinsek and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez grabbing court two 6-3.
 
Casasampere and Manyoma-Velasquez kept their winning ways into the singles session as they won courts five and three, 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. Ioana Dumitrescu was able to finish things off for the Mavericks on court six as she won the team’s fourth point 6-2, 6-1.
 
No. 2 Tarleton State 4, No. 7 Stephen F. Austin 0
 
Tarleton State wrapped up the first day of the WAC Tennis Tournaments with the fourth 4-0 win on the day, the third on the women’s side. Maretha Burger and Martha Makantasi won the first doubles court 6-1 and Elsa Boisson and Ximena Morales clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court two.
 
Adeliya Mukhutdinova quickly won the second point for the Texans with a straight 6-0, 6-0 set win on singles court six. Noelia Lorca won her match on court four 6-1, 6-1, which allowed Boisson to clinch Tarleton State’s victory on court two with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
