HARLINGEN, Texas – UT Arlington goes back-to-back and wins their second WAC Men’s Tennis Championship in the last two years, winning today’s match against No. 2 Grand Canyon 4-3. Freshman Andres Medus was the hero for the Mavericks today as he won the tiebreaking match on singles court four.

With all five other matches completed, the score was tied at 3 apiece and all the attention went towards UTA’s Medus and GCU’s Alfred Almasi, who were entering their third set after Almasi won the tiebreaker in the second set. Having all of the pressure on their shoulders, both student-athletes gave an extraordinary effort in the final set, but Medus was able to pull ahead and win the clinching match point for the Mavericks, crowning them the 2024 WAC Men’s Tennis Champions.

After losing singles court five to GCU’s Jonathan Da Silva 6-0, 6-1, UTA won the next two completed singles courts to take a 3-1 lead. Pedro Sasso took court six 6-3, 6-4 and Joan Torres Espinosa claimed court one 6-0, 7-5. The Lopes rallied back by taking courts two and three, courtesy of Gerhard Sullwald 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 6-2 and David Wekesa 7-5, 7-5, respectively. That’s when all eyes turned to court four for the championship deciding match between Medus and Almasi with Medus coming out on top 6-4, 6-7(4-7), 6-2.

UTA got the all-important doubles point in the beginning of the match as Meethre Barot and Espinosa won court two 6-1 followed by Medus and Dante Teramo clinching court three 6-2.

UT Arlington now looks towards the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament as they await to find their opponent on The Selection Show on NCAA.com on April 29th.
