2024 WAC Softball Release - Week Twelve
GCU, CBU STAYS STEADY ATOP OF WAC STANDINGS
After the sixth week of conference play, Grand Canyon maintain the top spot of the WAC standings with a 17-3 WAC record, while California Baptist holds second place at 12-6. Seattle U is in third place with a 11-9 record. Utah Valley and UT Arlington are knotted up in fourth at 10-9.
TREMENDOUSLY TRIERWEILER
Grand Canyon’s
Ashley Trierweiler earned WAC Player of the Week after she had a .677 batting average (10-15), three doubles, one home run, five runs and six RBIs. She also had two stolen bases, 29 putouts, one assist, a 1.067 slugging percentage and a .625 on base percentage. Trierweiler leads the WAC in multiple categories including batting average (.469), runs (60), hits (76), on base percentage (.519) and stolen bases (21).
HEY BATTER BATTER
In the latest NCAA Division I national statistics report on April 24, multiple WAC players rank in the top 30 in batting average. Grand Canyon’s
Ashley Trierweiler ranks No. 7 in the nation at .469. Tarleton State’s
Kelci Hill slotted in at No. 18 with .436. Abilene Christian’s
Kaydee Bennett tied for 26th with .431. In toughest to strikeout, Southern Utah’s
Alayah Toscano ranked No. 22 with 92 bat appearances and only three strikeouts in 41 games for a 30.7 strikeout average. Stephen F. Austin’s
Ellie Vance ranked 36th with a 25.4 strikeout average, while
Tristyn Trull of Tarleton State tied for 41st (25.5).
SUU SNAPS GCU’S WAC WINNING STREAK
Southern Utah snapped Grand Canyon’s 11-game conference winning streak in come from behind fashion on Apr. 20 in a 8-7 win. The Thunderbirds had four players with multi-hit games in
Kassidy Munoz (4-4, 2 runs),
Emily Gonzalez (2-3),
Taralyn Ollison (2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and
Laurie Cooke (2-3, 3 RBIs). Ollison and Cooke had key hits in the seventh inning to score two runs to put the Thunderbirds 8-7 over the Lopes.
Keimon Winston returned to the diamond at the bottom of the seventh after starting to pick up the final out and a save for Southern Utah.
