ARLINGTON, Texas – The Grand Canyon women’s tennis team will look to continue their postseason dominance as they found out on Monday afternoon that they will take on San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship.
The Lopes will battle with San Diego in the USC Regionals on May 3
rd. The Toreros were 16-7 on the year, going 5-1 in the West Coast Conference (WCC). San Diego made it all the way to the championship match in the WCC tournament, but lost 4-0 to Pepperdine. The Lopes will also be joined by USC and Cal Poly in the regional.
Grand Canyon will travel to Southern California with momentum on their side as they’re coming off their WAC Women’s Tennis Championship, collecting three 4-0 sweeps in the tournament. The Lopes took four spots on the WAC Women’s All-Tournament Team, headlined by WAC Player of the Year, Natasha Puehse, being awarded the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player (MOP). Santa Strombacha, Valeriia Krokhotina, and Iva Sepa joined Puehse on the All-Tournament Team.
The first two rounds of competition will take place May 3-5. The winners of the regionals will advance to the super-regionals May 10/11. The eight super-regional winners will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to compete for the national championship May 17-19.
